Rye Coalition - Paid In Full 7"
$3.00 - $15.00
They’re backl! Rye Coalition’s “Paid in Full” marks the band’s first recording in over 20 years, and pays a debt of gratitude to music titans, Steve Albini and Rick Froberg. The single honors these incredible dudes by covering a couple of classics, Shellac’s “Wingwalker” and Drive Like Jehu’s “Bullet Train To Vegas”. No spin, no interpretation, just the songs the way they were meant to be played. It’s the cover record no one asked for, you’re welcome! All proceeds of the release go to Letters Charity, Chicago, IL.
_______________________
Rye Coalition, hailing from Jersey City, New Jersey is an American punk rock band, active from 1993-2006, known for their gritty fusion of post-hardcore aggression, classic rock swagger, and blue-collar authenticity. Formed in 1993, while in high school, friends, vocalist Ralph Cuseglio, guitarists Jon Gonnelli and Herb Wiley, bassist Justin Morey, and drummer Dave Leto, gained underground attention with raw, energetic live shows and releases on indie labels like Gern Blandsten, Troubleman and Tiger Style Records.
Rye Coalition’s early sound blended the chaotic intensity of 1990s post-hardcore with sardonic lyrics and riff-heavy guitar work, drawing comparisons to bands like Drive Like Jehu and The Jesus Lizard. As their music evolved, the band began to embrace more classic rock and hard rock influences in the songwriting. Their 2002 Sub Pop single stands out as an obvious “tip of the hat” to classic rock bands that came to influence their sound in the early aughts. Their third full length, On Top, is a riff-drenched, AC/DC-meets-Fugazi hybrid that epitomizes this shift in their sonic identity.
By 2003, Rye recorded their fourth full-length album, Curses with Nirvana / Foo Fighters legend Dave Grohl, a long-time fan of the band. Despite their label DreamWorks folding and the subsequent collapse of the major label sales paradigm, the album would eventually be released by Gern Blandsten in 2006 and showcased their most polished and ambitious work to date. Despite critical praise, the band receded from the spotlight, going on an indefinite hiatus by 2007.
Rye Coalition developed a devoted cult following through relentless touring, visceral live performances, and an uncompromising artistic stance. In 2014, the documentary Rye Coalition: The Story of the Hard Luck 5 chronicled their underdog journey, reviving interest in their legacy.
Now considered underground legends and pioneers of screamo, Rye Coalition's influence resonates through punk, indie, and noise rock scenes of today. Their blend of no-frills intensity and rock 'n' roll bravado endures, testament to a band that never chased trends but carved out their own bruised, blistering path.
